Kids Helping Kids
“I can
think of nothing more powerful than the sight of children
advocating on behalf of other children.”
-Lois Capps to Congress on 6/11/08 with regard to Kidz for
a Cure
On
Saturday, May 2nd
from 9am –
noon, children of all ages from the Santa Barbara area will
come together to support local pediatric cancer patients by
hosting the Second
Annual Kidz for a
Cure toy sale and
celebration. All proceeds benefit the Cancer Center of
Santa Barbara’s pediatric research fund.
The event will
take place in the parking lot of the Cancer Center behind
the Cottages located at 524 and 526 W. Pueblo Street.
Kidz
for a Cure was spearheaded
by now nine-year old business-owner, Madison Lewandowski.
Madison wanted to find a way to help find a cure for
pediatric cancer, while showing other children the magic of
philanthropy. A fourth grader, who donates a portion of her
business profits to Kidz for a Cure, has raised money for
victims of Hurricane Katrina and has helped raise funds for
Girl Inc. She says, "I love helping out. I think cancer is
an important thing to try to fix. Kids sometimes don't
think that they can help big things like cancer, but I want
to show them, and the adults, that we really can."
This
year is special, because the event takes place a week
before Global Youth Service Day. Another young lady who has
similar goals, 14-year old Blake Colvin, the founder of
Cupcakes for Cancer, will be teaming up with Madison this
year to help spread the word about youth service and
raising funds for cancer research.
Mr. Santa
Barbara, Larry Crandell, will be at the event. Cookie the
Clown will be in attendance, as well as “Cupcakes for
Cancer”. There will be music from The Newcats (a band
consisting of kids and teens) and food, as well as
face-painting, origami crane folding, Taylor Brayden
mini-massages, a raffle, silent auction, and more. Prizes
include: Brunch at The Biltmore, stays at The Canary and
Ramada, Tickets to Legoland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and
Disneyland, signed goodies from Dom DeLuise, BBQ dinner for
8 at Firestation #12, party entertainment, dance camp,
personalized hair pampering, with many more items coming
in.
Anyone
who is interested in participating in the sale, must bring
gently-used toys (clean and in good working condition),
games, books, video tapes/DVDs and/or electronics
(operable) the morning of the event. Individuals may set up
their “booth” beginning at 8am.
To participate, you must reserve a space by April
29th.
Space is
limited.
